Does God Still Speak Today? Understanding How God Communicates
Have you ever wished God would give you instant directions for your life? Like a spiritual Google Maps that immediately shows you which path to take? Many of us find ourselves looking for God's voice in strange places - fortune cookies, horoscopes, or randomly opening the Bible hoping for divine guidance.
But these approaches reveal how easily we overcomplicate hearing from God. The question "Does God still speak today?" represents a crucial fork in the road for believers. Your answer determines whether you move forward with confidence or remain stuck in place, waiting for some mythical billboard from heaven.

Why We Struggle to Hear God's Voice
We live in an instant culture. We want same-day shipping, instant downloads, and coffee in 90 seconds. When we bring these same expectations into our faith, we want God to answer on our timeline - a "Prime delivery God" with two-day shipping at most.
But God's kingdom doesn't operate on our schedule. His work rarely resembles instant oatmeal; it's more like planting a seed and watching it grow. This is precisely what Jesus taught in Mark 4:26-29:
"This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself, the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it because the harvest has come."

How Does God's Kingdom Work?
Jesus tells a story about seeds, dirt, and a process. It's not exciting or flashy - there's no fire from heaven or dramatic moment. Instead, God often moves in a slow, steady rhythm through hidden things. For those of us who love fireworks and instant results, this can be challenging to accept.
1. God Starts with a Seed
"A man scatters seed on the ground." In the Bible, a seed often represents God's word, His voice, or His purpose planted in a life. Jesus explains this in Luke 8:11: "The seed is the word of God."
The remarkable thing is that God plants the seed before you even realize there's a calling. Before you see the need, He has already prepared you to meet it. Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you."
This means God is already ahead of you in whatever situation you're facing tomorrow. He's already there in your Monday meetings, your family challenges, and your difficult decisions.
2. Growth Happens Even When You Can't See It
"Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how."
The farmer scatters the seed and then goes about his life - sleeping, waking, checking the weather - while growth happens beneath the surface. When you plant grass seed, you water it and check it every morning, but for a week, all you see is dirt. Underground, however, life is breaking through as roots dig deep.
This teaches us a profound truth: God's silence is not His absence. His stillness is not His inactivity. We often want God to work on our timeline, but kingdom growth happens on His schedule. This requires us to trust the process and the waiting, as Psalm 27:14 encourages: "Wait for the Lord. Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."
3. Purpose Has Stages
"All by itself, the soil produces grain. First the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head."
This verse can be frustrating because it forces us to admit that purpose unfolds in steps, not leaps. There's no skipping the order, no spiritual life hack to fast-forward the process.
This is particularly challenging for younger generations who have grown up in a culture that normalizes immediacy. You can become famous on TikTok in minutes or order almost anything for next-day delivery. When it comes to life purpose, this cultural focus on instant gratification makes small progress feel like failure.
Many young people have been told to "find your passion" and "change the world," which is inspiring but crushing when you're 24 and answering customer service calls. You've been told to "be authentic," but no one explained that discovering God's purpose for you is a process, not an instant revelation.
Jesus gives us permission to be in whatever stage we're in. If you're in the stalk stage, stay in it and grow. The stalk may not be glamorous, but it will carry the weight of the head and kernel when the time comes.
Even Jesus embraced slow and steady stages - 30 years of quiet preparation, three years of public ministry, three days in a tomb, and then resurrection.
4. When the Harvest Comes, Act
"As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it because the harvest has come."
The phrase "as soon as" indicates urgency. Proverbs 10:5 says, "He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son."
When the moment comes, move. Some opportunities are like windows - if you miss them, they're gone. Your boarding call at the airport doesn't wait until you feel ready to board; the plane will leave without you.
God's timing is perfect, but it often requires your obedience in the moment. The harvest moment comes when God has been moving beneath the surface, and the situation finally becomes visible. When it does, it's time to act - not out of fear or hesitation, but with confident movement.

How to Listen to God in Your Daily Life
So how do we apply this to our Tuesday mornings and Friday afternoons? Here are four practical ways to listen to God:
1. Spot the Seed
Ask God, "What have you already put in my hand?" Is it a skill, relationship, resource, or opportunity? Then do one thing with it. Even if it seems small, it's significant in God's hands. Send that text, make that call, or set up that meeting.
2. Listen to His Word
Scripture is the clearest way to understand God's voice. He speaks most directly through the Bible.
3. Pay Attention to His World
Creation shouts God's glory. We can see His movement in nature and in people. Surround yourself with godly voices that bring clarity, not confusion.
4. Notice His Promptings
The Holy Spirit gives purpose, understanding, and direction. He provides comfort and strength while nudging you toward God's will.

Life Application
Here's a 24-hour challenge: Do one thing in the next day that represents planting or tending to a seed God has given you. Don't wait for perfect conditions or stall until you have everything figured out.
Send that encouraging text you've been putting off. Offer help to the neighbor who annoys you. Start that conversation you've been nervous about. Share a Bible verse with someone who needs to hear it. Or simply open God's Word and listen to Jesus speaking to you.
Don't overthink it - just plant it. God still speaks. He has a purpose for you, and it's not hidden from you; it's growing in you.
Ask yourself:
When we live out God's purpose together, we not only find our own purpose but help others discover theirs in Him.

Ask yourself:
- What seed has God already placed in my life that I've been ignoring?
- Where am I trying to rush God's process instead of trusting His timing?
- What one step of obedience can I take in the next 24 hours?
When we live out God's purpose together, we not only find our own purpose but help others discover theirs in Him.
