Not Ashamed: Finding Courage to Stand for Your Faith
When facing opposition for your faith, it's easy to feel intimidated or even afraid. But Scripture teaches us that God has given us everything we need to stand firm with boldness and courage. The Apostle Paul's words to Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:7-8 remind us that "the spirit God gave us does not make us timid (cowardly), but gives us power, love and self-discipline."
The Divine Dynamite Within Us
The Greek word for "power" in this passage is "dunamos" - the same word from which we get "dynamite." This isn't just any power; it's explosive, transformative power from God Himself. When Paul tells Timothy not to be ashamed of the testimony about the Lord, he's reminding him that the same dynamite power that makes the gospel effective for salvation lives within every believer.
This power isn't something we generate ourselves. It's God's Spirit working in and through us, giving us the ability to stand firm when our faith is challenged.
This power isn't something we generate ourselves. It's God's Spirit working in and through us, giving us the ability to stand firm when our faith is challenged.
What Happens When We Face Opposition for Our Faith?
To understand how this power works in real life, let's look at the story of the man born blind in John 9. After Jesus healed him, this man faced intense questioning and opposition from the religious leaders. His experience teaches us five important lessons about standing firm in our faith:
1. Even Family May Not Have Your Back
When the healed man was questioned, his own parents distanced themselves, saying, "He is of age; ask him." They were afraid of being "canceled" - put out of the synagogue. Jesus warned his followers that sometimes even parents, siblings, and friends might betray those who stand for the truth. When you face opposition for your faith, don't be surprised if some people, even family members, don't support you.
2. People May Try to Redefine Truth
The Pharisees attempted to redefine reality by declaring, "We know this man [Jesus] is a sinner." When people can't fight your truth, they often try to change what truth means. We see this in our culture when traditional definitions of marriage, gender, or human life are redefined. Paul warned Timothy that a time would come when "people will not put up with sound doctrine" but would "gather around them teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear."
3. Getting Snarky Rarely Helps
When the healed man became sarcastic with the Pharisees ("Do you want to become his disciples too?"), they hurled insults at him and threw him out. While we need boldness, we must remember Peter's instruction to share our faith "with gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15). Sarcasm and snark can cost us the platform to continue speaking about Jesus.
4. Expect Mistreatment
The religious leaders insulted the healed man, saying he was "steeped in sin at birth." Jesus warned his followers: "If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also" (John 15:20). Following Jesus often has negative consequences, but Jesus also said, "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me" (Matthew 5:11).
5. Your Story Is Undeniable
The most powerful thing about the healed man's testimony was its simplicity: "One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" People may argue with your theology or politics, but they cannot argue with your personal experience of how Jesus has changed your life. What's your story? "I once was lost, but now I'm found." "I once was angry, but now I have peace." "I once was broken, but now I've found healing."

The Holy Spirit: Your Advocate
If you're thinking, "I don't have the strength to stand up for my faith," you're right! It's not about your strength—it's about God's power working through you. The Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called our "Advocate" (Paraclete in Greek), walks alongside us and lives within us.
The word "Paraclete" literally means "one called alongside." Like an officiating partner who stands beside a referee being challenged, the Holy Spirit stands with us when our faith is tested. But it's even better than that—He doesn't just stand beside us; He lives within us!
As 1 John 4:4 reminds us, "Greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world." You have God's dynamite power living inside you!

Life Application
Think about the story of the boy who was being bullied at school. When his father confronted the bully's father and promised to defend his son, the boy walked with new confidence—not because he had suddenly grown stronger, but because he knew his father had his back.
In the same way, when you face opposition for your faith, remember that your heavenly Father is with you. You can stand tall and be bold because you have the dynamite power of God living inside you.
This week:
Reflect on your own story. How has Jesus changed you? Practice sharing this simple testimony in a way that's authentic and compelling.
When you feel intimidated about sharing your faith, remember that the Holy Spirit is your advocate who stands with you and lives in you.
Ask yourself: In what situations do I tend to become timid about my faith? How might remembering God's power in me change my response?
Consider someone in your life who needs to hear about Jesus. Pray for an opportunity to share your faith with them with both boldness and gentleness. Remember, you don't need to generate courage on your own. The Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline to stand firm in our faith.
