When the World Grows Dark, God Still Shines His Light
In our daily lives, we all experience moments of darkness - whether it's a literal power outage or the metaphorical darkness that comes from life's challenges. Just as the town of Ashland recently experienced blackouts, leaving residents uncertain and frustrated, we sometimes find ourselves in spiritual darkness, wondering where God is in the midst of our struggles.
What Does the Bible Say About God's Light in Darkness?
The story of the ninth plague in Exodus 10 provides a powerful illustration of how God's light shines even in the darkest circumstances. When God commanded Moses to stretch his hand toward heaven, a supernatural darkness covered all of Egypt for three days - darkness so thick it could be felt. Yet in Goshen, where God's people lived, there was light as usual.
This wasn't just a historical event; it's a timeless truth about God's character and His relationship with His people.

When Darkness Feels Like It's Winning
Understanding the Depth of Spiritual Darkness
The Hebrew word for darkness used in this passage is "hosek," which means more than just the absence of light. It represents despair, confusion, and spiritual heaviness. This wasn't merely a physical blackout - it was emotional, mental, and spiritual suffocation.
By the time of the ninth plague, Pharaoh had already witnessed eight previous plagues, each one targeting a false god that Egypt worshipped. The Nile turning to blood challenged Hapi, the god of the Nile. The plague of frogs confronted Heket, the goddess of fertility. The livestock plague struck at Apis, the sacred bull god.
The Significance of Darkness in Egypt
This final plague of darkness was particularly devastating because Egypt worshipped Ra, the sun god, who was considered the symbol of Pharaoh's divine power. When God extinguished the sun, He was making a clear statement: "I am not one of your gods. I am the only God."
For three days, the most powerful civilization of that time was completely paralyzed. They couldn't control armies, economies, or architecture when they couldn't even control light.

How Does God's Presence Still Shine Today?
The Supernatural Light in Goshen
While Egypt sat in total darkness, God's people experienced "light as usual." This phrase isn't casual - it's supernatural. The Hebrew word for light is "or," the same word used in Genesis 1:3 when God said, "Let there be light."
This wasn't candlelight or any human-made illumination. This was the same supernatural light that spoke creation into existence. It represents life, revelation, and truth - the kind of light that brings understanding to confusion and hope to despair.
God's Light Is Relational, Not Situational
The light in Goshen wasn't dependent on circumstances but on God's presence with His people. Your safety isn't found in your surroundings but in God's presence. When the world went dark, God showed up for His people.
This same principle applies today. God's light isn't situational - it's relational. His presence doesn't depend on what's happening around you; it depends on who is living in you.

Why Does Darkness Still Try to Win?
The Paralysis of Spiritual Darkness
During those three days in Egypt, "no one moved." The entire empire was paralyzed. This reveals something crucial about how darkness operates - it doesn't just obscure vision; it stops progress and paralyzes action.
Darkness still whispers the same lies today: "You don't matter. You're on your own. It's too late." It tempts us to trade light for shadows and truth for comfort.
How Darkness Sneaks In
Darkness seldom crashes in dramatically. Instead, it sneaks in through exhaustion, cynicism, and compromise. It convinces us that maybe the darkness is easier than the fight. Every time we stop moving in faith, every time we stop trusting God, darkness gains ground.
But here's the truth: darkness may surround you, but it doesn't define you. It might press in, but it doesn't possess you. Darkness wins only when God's people stop showing up.

What Does It Mean to Carry God's Light?
The Power of One Light
Just like one candle can change an entire dark room, your peace, hope, and kindness become visible when you walk in God's light. You don't need hundreds of candles - you just need one flame to change the atmosphere.
From Survival to Mission
God didn't just bring the Israelites out of darkness to admire the light. He brought them out so they could carry the light. Jesus echoed this truth when He said, "You are the light of the world."
The light that glowed in Goshen now glows in you. You are the lamp God sets in the window of a dark world. Light doesn't argue with darkness - it outshines it.

How Can We Shine God's Light in Dark Times?
Practical Ways to Be Light
When your week feels chaotic and the world seems dim, remember that you don't have to make your own light - you already carry His light. Here's how to let it shine:
The Connection to Jesus
The same God who spoke light into creation at the beginning spoke "It is finished" at the cross. When Jesus stepped out of the tomb, it was like watching the first dawn after the longest night in history. The light of the world didn't just push back the darkness - He conquered it forever.
Life Application
This week, instead of trying to fix every dark place around you, focus on letting God's light shine through you. You don't have to manufacture hope or create peace - you simply need to follow the One who is the Light of the World.
When darkness presses in through difficult circumstances, remember that the same God who lit up Goshen and rolled away the stone lives in you. His light fills in the cracks, takes away the shadows, and expands into every area of your life.
Questions for Reflection:
When your week feels chaotic and the world seems dim, remember that you don't have to make your own light - you already carry His light. Here's how to let it shine:
- Speak peace when everyone else is tense
- Offer hope when others complain
- Show grace when it's least expected
- Open God's Word - His light expands through Scripture
- Whisper a prayer - even just saying "God" is more than enough
- Speak life into someone else's difficulty

Questions for Reflection:
- Where in your life do you feel surrounded by "darkness so thick you can feel it"?
- How can you practically carry God's light into the dark situations you encounter this week?
- What would change in your daily routine if you truly believed that God's presence shines brightest in the darkest moments?
- Who in your life needs to see God's light through your words and actions?
