Jesus said things that are easy to love until they require something from us. Loving others, forgiving enemies, showing mercy — these sound beautiful until they land on a specific person in your life. This tension is at the heart of what it means to call Jesus "Lord."

What Does It Really Mean to Call Jesus Lord?
Most of us use the word "Lord" constantly. We pray it, sing it, and build our lives around it. And most of us genuinely mean it. But there is a difference between using "Lord" as a title and actually living under His authority.

Lord means He tells you what to do. That changes things. It is easy to love Jesus as Lord when we need something from Him. "Lord, help me. Lord, protect my kids. Lord, provide for me." That arrangement feels comfortable. The tension comes when Jesus turns it around and says, "Now I want you to do something."

Jesus Isn't Hard to Understand. He's Hard to Obey.
In Luke 6, starting at verse 27, Jesus lays out some of the clearest and most challenging instructions in all of Scripture:

• Love your enemies.
• Do good to those who hate you.
• Bless those who curse you.
• Pray for those who mistreat you.
• Treat others the way you want to be treated.
• Be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
• Deal with the log in your own eye before focusing on the speck in someone else's.

None of this is confusing. The problem is not understanding what Jesus said. The problem is doing it.

Then comes verse 46: "So why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord!' when you don't do what I say?" - Luke 6:46 New Living Translation (NLT)

That question does not ask whether you heard Him. It does not ask whether you agree with Him. It asks whether you are actually doing what He said.

How We Say Yes to Jesus While Still Doing Our Own Thing
Most of us do not look at Jesus and say a flat-out "no." We are more subtle than that. We say yes, but we add one small word: "but."

• "Yes, Jesus, I know you said forgive, but you don't know what they did to me."
• "Yes, Jesus, I know you said love my enemy, but this person is awful."
• "Yes, Jesus, I know you said deal with the log in my eye, but their speck is enormous."

This is how we can call Jesus Lord while still deciding which parts of what He says actually apply to us. If Jesus is only Lord when we agree with Him, we are not really asking Him to be Lord. We are asking Him to agree with us.

This is important to be clear about. Obeying Jesus does not earn salvation. He does not love us more when we get it right. He gave Himself for us when we could not rescue ourselves. "But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." - Romans 5:8 New Living Translation (NLT)

The Jesus who saves us is also the Jesus we call Lord. And if He has the final say, which He does, then when we are not in agreement with Him, He does not really have the final say. We do. That is the tension worth sitting with.

Hearing Jesus Is Not the Same as Following Jesus
Coming to church matters. Knowing Scripture matters. Taking notes, gathering in community, discussing what you heard — all of it matters. But Jesus does not stop at hearing. Something is supposed to happen because we heard it. In Luke 6:47, Jesus says: "I will show you what it's like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it." - Luke 6:47, New Living Translation (NLT)

Notice the progression. Come. Listen. Follow. All three matter. But we can get very comfortable stopping at the second one.

What "I've Been Meaning To" Really Means

How many times have you said something like this?

• "I've been meaning to make that call."
• "I've been meaning to apologize."
• "I've been meaning to have that conversation."
• "I've been meaning to serve."

"Meaning to" is just another way of saying "I haven't." And delay can make disobedience feel respectable, because we never technically said no to Jesus. We just said later. We keep listening, keep agreeing, keep meaning to, but we never move.

And after a while, we get used to it. The first time the Holy Spirit puts His finger on something in our hearts, we feel it. We say, "You're right, I need to deal with that." And then we don't. A few weeks later it comes up again. And after enough time, we become very good at hearing Jesus without doing anything about what we heard.

Why Obedience Looks Boring (And Why That Matters)
Jesus gives a picture of what real obedience looks like in Luke 6:48: "It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock." - Luke 6:48 New Living Translation (NLT)

Nobody takes pictures of a foundation. Nobody walks onto a construction site and says, "Wow, look at that beautiful hole in the ground." We take pictures of the finished house. But without the foundation, everything above it eventually collapses.

Obedience is the digging. It is the work nobody sees, and nobody applauds.

• Nobody applauds when you choose not to send that text.
• Nobody sees when you finally admit you were wrong.
• Nobody knows about the thing you stopped doing because Jesus had been dealing with you about it.

But that unseen work is what holds everything else up. Before anything impressive rises above the ground, someone has been doing a lot of work underneath it.

You Don't Decide Jesus Is Lord in the Hard Moment. You've Already Been Deciding.
Life happens. The phone rings with bad news. Someone you trust lets you down. You lose a job. Your kids make decisions you never wanted for them. Something comes that you never saw coming. You do not suddenly decide in that moment whether Jesus is Lord. You have already been deciding that all along, through every small act of obedience or delay. The foundation is either there or it is not. Obedience is not just about getting the rules right. It is learning to trust Jesus enough to actually do what He says.

Life Application
This week, identify one specific thing Jesus has already told you to do that you are still only "meaning to" do. Not something vague. Something specific. A conversation you have been avoiding. An apology you have been delaying. A person you have been withholding forgiveness from. A habit you know He has been dealing with you about.
Do not wait until you feel ready. Do not wait until things settle down. Take one concrete step toward it this week.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

• When I call Jesus "Lord," am I inviting Him to lead me, or am I asking Him to agree with me?
• Is there something Jesus has clearly spoken to me about that I have been delaying with the word "later"?
• What would it look like this week to move from hearing Jesus to actually following Him in one specific area of my life?

Jesus' question isn't whether you heard Him. It is not whether you agree with Him. It is simply this: "So why do you keep calling me 'Lord, Lord!' when you don't do what I say?" - Luke 6:46 New Living Translation (NLT)

Dig deep. Do the unseen work. That is what following Jesus actually looks like.
