Prayer can feel strange. People standing in circles, holding hands, speaking quietly to someone they cannot see. If you have ever felt unsure about prayer or wondered whether God is actually listening, you are not alone. This is an honest look at what prayer really is, why it matters, and what it means to pray with confidence.

Why Does Prayer Feel So Weird?
Let's be honest. Prayer is a little awkward. Someone squeezes your hand as a signal to pray. People use old-fashioned language. Silence stretches on longer than expected. And then someone says "Lord..." and you know it is going to be a long one.

But underneath all of that awkwardness is something deeply real. People are praying for their marriages. They are praying for teenagers who do not know the Lord. They are praying for freedom from anxiety, for healing from addiction, for relationships that feel broken or distant.

And after saying "amen," many people sit there wondering: Did God actually hear that? Does it make a difference?

Do You Wonder If God Really Wants to Hear From You?
Most people believe God exists. Most people believe He is powerful. But somewhere along the way, many start to believe He is not really listening to them specifically. Too many failures. Too many mistakes. Too much distance.

That is where a lot of people get stuck with prayer. Not because they doubt God's existence, but because they doubt their own access to Him.

That is exactly what Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3 speaks to.

Ephesians 3:14-19 contains one of the greatest prayers in the entire New Testament. Here is what it says:

"When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God." - Ephesians 3:14-19 New Living Translation (NLT)

Movement 1: Who Are You Talking To?
Prayer starts with remembering who God is

Before Paul asks for anything, He does something most of us skip. He reminds himself of who he is approaching. He falls to his knees and prays to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.

He does not start with a list. He does not open with a problem. He begins by acknowledging the character of the One he is speaking to.

Think about it this way. A Father does not expect His children to schedule an appointment to talk to Him. He does not expect them to rehearse what they are going to say. He just wants them to walk in. They are welcome. They are known. They are loved.

That is the confidence Paul carries into this prayer. He is not hoping to catch God on a good day. He is not wondering if he is accepted. He comes as a son speaking to his Father, already resting in the relationship before He ever makes a request.

This is foundational. Everything Paul is about to ask grows out of that one truth. He is not talking to a distant God. He is coming before a Father who already knows him by name, already loves him, and welcomes Him into His presence.

Movement 2: What Are You Asking For?
Are your prayers bigger than your problems?

Here is where Paul's prayer gets surprising. Consider where he is writing from. He is not sitting at a quiet table with a cup of coffee. He is writing from prison.

If anyone had reason to pray for changed circumstances, it was Paul. And yet, this is what he prays:

"I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your hearts as you trust in Him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong." - Ephesians 3:16-17 New Living Translation (NLT)

Paul does not ask God to change what is happening around Him. He asks God to do something in Him.

Praying for strength instead of easier circumstances
Nobody gets stronger by asking someone to make the weights lighter. Resistance is part of what builds strength. Paul understood this. He does not pray for lighter circumstances. He prays for stronger people.

Most of us spend a lot of time asking God to change our circumstances. Pray for problems to go away. Pray for difficult people to become easier. Pray for situations to work themselves out. And there is nothing wrong with bringing those things to God. He cares about every detail of your life.

But Paul's prayer pushes further. He is asking God to do something that circumstances cannot take away. He prays that God's people will be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, that Christ will be made at home in their hearts, and that their roots will grow deep in God's love.

Most of us pray for whatever benefits us. Paul prays for what glorifies God. That is a different kind of prayer.

Movement 3: What Do You Believe God Can Do?

Paul closes this prayer with a breathtaking statement about the love of God:

"And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God." - Ephesians 3:18-19 New Living Translation (NLT)

He is not just asking people to know about God's love. He is asking them to experience it. To be filled with it. To be made complete by it.

Faith is not certainty about outcomes. It is confidence in God's character.
Our confidence in prayer is not that we know exactly what God will do. Our confidence is that we know exactly who God is. Faith is not certain about outcomes. Faith is confidence in the character of God. And that is where bold prayers begin.

Paul ends this section with these words:

"Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think." - Ephesians 3:20 New Living Translation (NLT)

God is not limited by what we can imagine. He is able to do infinitely more. That is the God we are praying to.

This week, try praying like Paul

Before you bring your list to God this week, pause. Start by simply acknowledging who He is. Remind yourself that you are coming before the Father who knows you, loves you, and welcomes you. Then, instead of only asking God to change your circumstances, ask Him to do something in you. Ask for inner strength. Ask for deeper roots in His love. Ask to experience His love more fully.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect on this:

1. When I pray, do I start with who God is, or do I jump straight to my list of needs?
2. Am I mostly asking God to change my circumstances, or am I asking Him to change me?
3. Do I truly believe God wants to hear from me, even after my failures and mistakes?
4. What would it look like for me to pray one "big, hairy, audacious prayer" this week that only God can answer?

God hears you.
He is not too busy.
He is not waiting for you to get it together first.
Come to Him as a child comes to a Father.

That is where prayer begins.
