Sunday Morning Message

What Are You Missing?

How Prayer Changes the Way We See People Around Us

It is easy to go through an entire day looking at the world around us without truly seeing it. We pass people, we notice faces, but we miss what God sees. This is a challenge about shifting our perspective, expanding our capacity, and being willing to become the answer to our own prayers.

What Does It Mean to Truly See People the Way Jesus Did?

In Matthew chapter 9, Jesus is traveling from town to town, village to village. Crowds keep showing up. Everyone needs something. Everyone has a request. Most of us, after enough people pulling at us, would hit a wall. We love people, but there are days we simply do not want to see another person.

That is what makes Jesus so remarkable in this passage. He has every reason to be exhausted by the crowd, and yet Matthew tells us something different.

"Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." - Matthew 9:35-36 New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus sees the same crowd the disciples see. But He sees something no one else does. He sees people who are confused, helpless, and wandering. And rather than pulling back, He leans in with compassion.

A good prayer to carry into every day is simply this: God, what are You seeing that I am missing?

What Did Jesus Mean When He Said the Harvest Is Great?

When a church prays for God to bring more families, more kids, more people, that is a beautiful prayer. But growth comes with real demands. More families mean more rooms. More rooms mean more teams. More teams mean more leaders, more time, more resources.

A room cannot love a family. A room cannot help a parent disciple a child. People do that.

This is why Deuteronomy 6 is so important for families and churches alike.

"And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commandments that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up." - Deuteronomy 6:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)

Faith is not meant to stay within the walls of a church building. It is meant to permeate everyday life, dinner table conversations, bedtime routines, and car rides. When a child can watch a movie about Moses and explain what happens next because of what they learned on Sunday morning, that is the mission working exactly as it should.

What Happens When You Pray for God to Move?

Here is where prayer gets uncomfortable. It is easy to pray for God to send workers. It is easy to ask Him to raise up leaders, bring more families, and grow the church. That is a comfortable prayer, especially when we are thinking about somebody else doing the work.

But then Matthew turns the page.

"Jesus called His twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness." - Matthew 10:1 New Living Translation (NLT)

The disciples had just prayed for God to send workers. And Jesus had twelve of them standing right in front of Him. He did not launch a recruitment plan. He did not hand them a to-do list. He simply looked at the people who were praying and said, I am sending you.

What Does It Look Like When You Become the Answer to Your Own Prayer?

This is the moment the prayer becomes personal. It is one thing to ask God to do something. It is another thing entirely to realize that what needs to be done needs to be done by you.

Praying for your neighbor is good. But at some point, you may need to walk across the yard and knock on the door.

Praying for a family you see struggling is good. But God may be asking you to be the one who steps in.

Praying for a church to have more capacity to reach kids is good. But maybe part of that capacity is you stepping into a room to serve, or being generous so that another room becomes possible.

Jesus did not send twelve impressive, polished ministry professionals. He sent twelve ordinary, flawed men. And through them, the kingdom of God flourished. He called them, gave them what they needed, and sent them.

That is still how He works.

How Should We Pray When We Want God to Grow His Church?

The prayer shifts from God, send somebody to God, I am available. Send me.

That changes everything. It means praying with open hands, not just open hearts. It means being willing to rearrange something, give something, or step into something that costs us personally.

Praying for God to increase capacity for the mission He has already placed in front of us is a bold prayer. Because God has an interesting way of involving the people who are praying in the answer.

Life Application

"The harvest is great. The workers are few."

And God is still looking for people who will stop praying for someone else to go and simply say, here I am.

Send me.
