When You Don't Know the Way
Most of us have been there. Waiting for a sign. Praying for clarity. Asking God to just tell us what comes next. The good news is that this is not a new struggle. The disciples had the same questions, and Jesus answered them in a way that still challenges us today.
Why Do We Expect Jesus to Hand Us a Map?
It is easy to over-spiritualize the Christian life. We talk about waiting for open doors, closed doors, or a window to crack. We want direction spelled out so clearly that we can plug it into our GPS and go from there.
But following Jesus does not work that way. And John chapters 13 and 14 make that very clear.
Setting the Scene: The Night Before Everything Changed
Jesus and His disciples are in the upper room. It is the night before the crucifixion. Judas has already left. Jesus has told them one of them would betray Him. And now He tells them He is leaving, and they cannot come with Him.
For three years, these men had walked with Jesus. They had seen miracles. They had heard His teaching. And now He says this in John 13:33:
"Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can't come where I'm going."
- John 13:33 New Living Translation (NLT)
That had to be unsettling. And what follows is one of the most honest, human conversations in all of Scripture.

Peter's Question: Where Are You Going?
The Question We All Ask First
Peter does what most of us would do. He asks the obvious question. In verse 36, Simon Peter asks, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus tells Him He cannot follow now but will follow later. Peter pushes back immediately, saying he is ready to die for Jesus.
And Jesus responds with something Peter did not want to hear. Before the rooster crows the next morning, Peter would deny even knowing Him three times.
Peter was sincere. He genuinely believed he was ready to follow Jesus anywhere. But sincerity is not the same as understanding. And Jesus knew what Peter did not yet know about Himself.
Jesus Responds With Trust, Not a Timeline
Right after this, without skipping a beat, Jesus says in John 14:1:
"Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me."
- John 14:1 New Living Translation (NLT)
Think about the weight of that moment. The disciples have just been told someone will betray Jesus, that Peter will deny Him, and that Jesus is leaving. And His response is not to explain everything. It is to call them to trust.
That matters. God does not always start with explanation. He starts with trust.

Thomas's Question: How Do We Know the Way?
The Question Beneath All Our Questions
Jesus continues, telling them there is room in His Father's house, that He is going to prepare a place for them, and that they already know the way to where He is going.
Thomas cannot let that go. In verse 5 he says:
"No, we don't know, Lord. We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?" - John 14:5 New Living Translation (NLT)
Thomas is not being difficult. He is being honest. Jesus keeps speaking as if they already understand, and they do not. That kind of honesty takes courage, especially in a room full of people who might feel like they should already have the answers.
Jesus Does Not Give a Map. He Gives Himself.
Jesus answers Thomas in verse 6:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me." - John 14:6 New Living Translation (NLT)
Thomas asked how. Jesus said, I am the way.
That is a different kind of answer than what Thomas was looking for. And if we are honest, it is often a different kind of answer than what we are looking for too.

What Is the Difference Between a Map and a Guide?
A map tells you where to go so you can take it from there. A guide says, stay with me. Trust me. Keep walking with me.
There is a real temptation to treat Jesus like a spiritual GPS. We want the route laid out, every turn announced, every destination confirmed. And once we have the details, we quietly say, I've got it from here, and we take over.
But Jesus does not offer a map. He offers Himself. He says follow me, not here are the directions.
Not Knowing Everything Is Not the Same as Not Knowing the Way
None of the disciples in that room knew what the next few days would bring. Jesus would be arrested. Peter would deny Him. The crucifixion would come. They would think it was all over.
And then the resurrection would change everything.
Within weeks, they would watch Jesus ascend into heaven. Within about another month and a half, they would be standing before thousands, preaching the gospel, and over 3,000 people would be baptized into Christ.
They did not know any of that on the night in the upper room. But Jesus did. And He still said, follow me.
What You Can Know Right Now
Not knowing the full picture does not mean God has told you nothing. Consider this:

What You Can Know Right Now
Not knowing the full picture does not mean God has told you nothing. Consider this:
- You may not know what happens with your child, but you know what kind of parent you need to be today.
- You may not know what happens with your job, but you know what integrity looks like when you walk through that door tomorrow.
- You may not know how a relationship will turn out, but you know what truth, forgiveness, and patience look like right now.
What Do You Do When You Don't Know?
That is the question sitting underneath all of this. What do you do when you do not know what comes next?
Scripture is not just an instruction manual, and Jesus is not just someone who hands out directions. The more you know His Word, the more His Word knows you, because it is not just words on paper. It is a living person, and that person is Christ.
Jesus does not say He knows a way. He does not say He will show a possible way. He says, I am the way. That is a claim that demands a response. Every person has to decide what to do with it.
If He holds the way, then walking His way is the only way forward.
The Point Is Not the Map. The Point Is Jesus.
Peter never got the full picture. In John 21, Jesus tells Peter that following Him would one day cost Him His life. And after saying that, Jesus still uses the same words He always used. Follow me.
Peter did not get the whole map. But he had Jesus. And that was the point.
The goal is not to know everything about tomorrow. The goal is to follow Jesus with what you know today.

Life Application
This week, identify the one thing in front of you where you keep waiting for Jesus to show you the whole road before you take a step. It might be a relationship, a career decision, a health situation, or something in your family. Instead of waiting for the full map, take one step of obedience with what you already know. Trust the Guide, not the directions.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
Following Jesus has never been about having all the answers. It has always been about trusting the One who does.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- Where in my life am I waiting for complete clarity before I am willing to move forward in faith?
- Am I treating Jesus like a GPS I can take over once I have the route, or am I genuinely following Him as my guide?
- What do I already know about how God is calling me to live today, even if I do not know what tomorrow holds?
- Am I willing to say, I will follow Jesus with what I know today, even though I do not know everything about tomorrow?
Following Jesus has never been about having all the answers. It has always been about trusting the One who does.
