Are You Worried About Having Enough? What Jesus Says About Money, Worry, and Trust
Most of us have sat at a kitchen table staring at a bill we didn't know how to pay. Whether it's an unexpected expense, a job change, or just the weight of everyday costs adding up, the question eventually surfaces: Are we going to have enough? Jesus addressed this question directly, and His answer is both challenging and deeply reassuring.
What Does Jesus Actually Say About Worry and Money?
In Matthew 6, Jesus speaks to a crowd about the very real concerns of everyday life: food, drink, and clothing. These aren't luxuries. They are necessities. And yet, He tells them not to worry about these things.
"That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life, whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more than food, and your body more than clothing?" - Matthew 6:25 New Living Translation (NLT)
Before this verse, in Matthew 6:24, Jesus makes a bold statement: no one can serve two masters. You cannot serve both God and money. The word "therefore" (or "that is why") connects those two ideas. Worry about money and trust in God are in direct tension with each other.
Why Does Jesus Tell Us to Look at Birds?
It may seem strange that when people face real financial pressure, Jesus points them to birds. But what He says matters.
"Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to him than they are?" - Matthew 6:26 New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus is not telling people to stop working or planning. Birds work constantly. They search for food, build nests, and care for their young. The point is not that effort doesn't matter. The point is that the same Father who provides for birds cares far more deeply for you.
And then He asks a piercing question: Can all your worrying add a single moment to your life? When we worry, we run through every possible scenario. What if I lose my job? What if the car breaks down? What if another bill shows up? Most of those things haven't even happened yet, but we've already spent hours mentally living through them. And after all of that, the bill is still there. Tomorrow is still coming. Nothing has changed.
What Can We Learn From the Flowers of the Field?
Jesus continues with another illustration, this time using wildflowers.
"And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing. Yet Solomon in all of his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are." - Matthew 6:28-29 New Living Translation (NLT)
Solomon was the wealthiest and most powerful king in Israel's history. If anyone had access to the finest clothing money could buy, it was him. And Jesus says the wildflowers are dressed better than Solomon ever was.
But then Jesus adds something important. Those flowers are temporary. They bloom, and they fade. And yet God gave them extraordinary beauty. If God cares that much about something so temporary, how much more does He care for you?
Does God Really Know What You Need?
This is where the passage becomes deeply personal. In verse 32, Jesus says something that is easy to read but hard to truly live by.
"...your heavenly Father already knows all your needs." - Matthew 6:32 New Living Translation (NLT)
When finances are tight, the questions running through our minds are usually: How am I going to get what I need? Where will the money come from? What happens if something else goes wrong? Jesus does not answer all of those questions directly. Instead, He reminds us of something we may already know but don't always live like we believe: our Father already knows what we need.
That doesn't make the bills disappear. But there is a real difference between facing hard circumstances as though everything depends entirely on you, and facing them while remembering that your Father knows exactly what you are going through.
What Does "Seek the Kingdom First" Actually Mean?
After the birds, the flowers, and the reminder that God knows our needs, Jesus gives us the central principle of this passage.
"Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need." - Matthew 6:33 New Living Translation (NLT)
Seeking God's kingdom is not simply about attending church or reading your Bible. It is about living under God's care and rule. It means letting Jesus shape our decisions, how we treat people, and how we handle what we have been given. That doesn't change when money gets tight.
Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say, "Once you have enough saved up, then seek the kingdom." He does not say, "Once your finances are in order, then be generous." But that is often how we think. We tell ourselves we will give more when we make a little more. We will be more generous once the debt is paid down. We will follow more closely once life settles down.
Jesus flips that thinking entirely. We seek the kingdom first, especially when we don't feel like we have enough. Because it is not about us. It is about Him.
Is Jesus Promising That Following God Will Fix Your Financial Problems?
This is an important question, and the answer is no. This is not a formula for making financial struggles disappear. Jesus Himself says in the very next verse that tomorrow will bring its own troubles. The problems do not go away simply because we trust God.
"Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today." - Matthew 6:34 New Living Translation (NLT)
Jesus is being honest and realistic. He knows there will be things we cannot control and questions that will not be answered on our timeline. But He is not asking us to figure out the rest of our lives today. He invites us to trust the Father who already knows our needs and to take the next faithful step in front of us.
We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we can decide today who we are going to follow.
Life Application
This week, identify one area where worry about money or security has been driving your decisions more than your trust in God. It might be a decision you have been putting off, a habit of holding tightly to what you have, or a pattern of telling yourself you will be more generous or more faithful once things settle down.
Choose one concrete step this week to seek the kingdom first in that area, even if the circumstances haven't changed. That might mean giving when it feels uncomfortable, making a decision you've been delaying, or simply spending time in prayer, surrendering that worry to God instead of running through the scenarios again.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- Am I living as though everything depends entirely on me, or am I genuinely trusting that my Heavenly Father knows what I need?
- Is there something Jesus has been calling me to do that I have been waiting to act on until I feel more financially secure?
- In what areas of my life am I serving money more than I am serving God?
- What would it look like this week to seek the kingdom of God first, before I have all the answers?
