When Following Jesus Creates Division You Didn't Ask For
Following Jesus changes things. Not just your Sunday mornings or the words you use, but the way you handle conflict, what you reach for when life gets hard, and how you relate to the people closest to you. And not everyone around you will understand it.
That tension is exactly what Jesus was preparing His disciples for in Matthew 10, and it is just as real for followers of Christ today.
What Does Jesus Mean When He Says He Came to Bring a Sword?
At first glance, this passage is jarring. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, says something that sounds anything but peaceful.
"Don't imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth. I came not to bring peace, but a sword." - Matthew 10:34
But Jesus immediately explains what He means. The sword is not violence. It is division. His message will divide fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, people living under the same roof. This language actually draws from the prophet Micah, who described a society so broken that people could not even trust those in their own household. Jesus takes that image and tells His disciples: following Me can create that kind of fault line in your relationships. Not because Jesus enjoys broken relationships. He came to mend the broken. But when people make different decisions about Jesus, those decisions carry real weight.
Your Life Will Not Stay the Same After Following Jesus
When Jesus enters your life, He starts changing things from the inside out. And the people around you will notice, often before you even say a word. Things that never bothered you start to sting. The way you spend your time shifts. You start watching how you speak to your spouse. You realize winning every argument is not the same as winning the relationship. You start telling the truth even when a small lie would make life easier. Your temper, what you watch, who you are when nobody is looking- all of it starts to look different. What changes inside eventually shows up outside. And when it does, people notice. Sometimes they do not understand it. Sometimes they do not like it. They miss the old you.
Is the Tension Always About Faithfulness?
Here is something worth being honest about. Not every bit of tension proves you are being faithful. Sometimes the problem is not your conviction. It is the way you carry it. You can be right and still be obnoxious. When every conversation becomes a correction, every post needs your comment, and you seem to have strong opinions on everything, that is not faithfulness. That is exhausting.
"Fools have no interest in understanding. They only want to air their own opinions." - Proverbs 18:2
Conviction is not the same thing as being exhausting. But there are also genuine moments when Jesus is truly changing you, and the people around you feel it and push back simply because something is different.
What Happens When the People You Love Don't Understand Your Faith?
"If you love your Father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine." - Matthew 10:37
Jesus does not pick a random example here. He goes straight to the strongest human attachments. For the people hearing Jesus, family was not just who you spent holidays with. It shaped your identity, your security, your place in the world. Jesus is not telling anyone to stop loving their family. He is not anti-family. He is saying there may come a moment when following Him puts you at the other end of the table from someone you deeply love.
Why It Hurts More When It Comes From Family
It is one thing for a stranger to misunderstand you. It is something else entirely when it comes from a parent, a sibling, or a close friend. When someone whose opinion genuinely matters to you laughs it off, pulls back, or says "now you think you're better than us," that lands differently. Sometimes your presence alone feels like judgment, even when you have not said a single word. You are simply making a different choice, and that choice makes someone else wonder what it says about theirs. Maybe your family has always handled conflict by yelling and then acting like it never happened. But Jesus is changing how you handle anger. So this time you do not yell back. You take ownership. You refuse to say things you know will hurt. And suddenly the whole room feels different, not because anyone threw you out, but because you stopped participating in something everyone had gotten used to.
"Fearing people is a dangerous trap. But trusting the Lord means safety." - Proverbs 29:25
This is where it gets deeper. It is not just about what they think of you. It is about how much their approval controls you.
The Biggest Division Is the One Happening Inside You
"If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you cling to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find it." - Matthew 10:38-39
After addressing tension with family and friends, Jesus turns inward. He names the division that happens inside a person when following Him starts costing something real. When Jesus first mentioned the cross, no one in that crowd thought of jewelry. They thought of death. Jesus isn't saying following Him will make your life inconvenient. He is saying there will be moments when something in you has to die.
The Internal Conflict Every Believer Knows
Part of you wants to serve the Lord. But sometimes the real master is money. Part of you wants to say yes to whatever He asks. But part of you says no. Part of you knows His way is right. But your way feels like your right.
Paul put it plainly: "I want to do what is right, but I keep on doing what is wrong." - Romans 7:15
That collision between Romans 7 and Matthew 10 is where most of us actually live.
When the pressure builds, most people have somewhere they go. Stressed, angry, lonely, bored, exhausted. We want relief. Sometimes it is screens, shopping, food, work, gaming, or the gym. Whatever lets us check out for a while. But here is the honest question: Is it relief, or is it division? Is the thing you are reaching for giving you life, or slowly taking it away?
The Better Question to Ask Yourself
The easy question is: How do I make all this tension go away? But that is not the right question. The better question is: What am I going to do when following Jesus creates tension I did not ask for? Because the tension is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is often a sign that something is going right. Jesus is getting into the places you did not think were spiritual. He is changing the parts of you that you thought were just personality, just habit, just the way things have always been.
And the answer, as uncomfortable as it is, remains the same: follow Him.
Life Application
This week, identify one specific area where following Jesus is creating tension in your life. It might be a relationship, a habit, something you keep reaching for when life gets hard, or a part of your character that is still resisting change. Do not try to resolve the tension by avoiding it. Instead, bring it honestly before God and take one concrete step toward obedience, even if it costs you something.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
Following Jesus changes everything. Not just the big, visible things, but the quiet, internal ones too. The division you feel is real. But so is the life He promises beyond surrender.
That tension is exactly what Jesus was preparing His disciples for in Matthew 10, and it is just as real for followers of Christ today.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- Where is the real tension in my life right now, and is it coming from genuine faithfulness or from how I carry my convictions?
- Whose approval am I allowing to control my decisions more than my commitment to follow Jesus?
- What am I reaching for when life gets hard, and is it actually giving me life or slowly pulling me away from it?
- What is one thing Jesus is clearly calling me toward that I keep saying "not yet" to?
Following Jesus changes everything. Not just the big, visible things, but the quiet, internal ones too. The division you feel is real. But so is the life He promises beyond surrender.
