When Jesus declared, 'Before Abraham was, I am,' He was not making a grammatical mistake. He was claiming to be the same God who spoke to Moses from the burning bush in Exodus 3, the eternal I Am. The crowd understood exactly what He meant, and that is why they immediately reached for stones. This claim leaves no room for treating Jesus as simply a wise teacher or moral example. He did not come asking for a place in your life. He came claiming to be the Lord of it. That means following Him is not about adding Him to the orbit of your priorities. It means He becomes the center around which everything else finds its place.
