Rediscovering Wonder: Finding Faith Outside the Lines
Faith isn't meant to be contained within neat lines or predictable boxes. True faith often exists in the messy, wild spaces where wonder and trust collide.
What Happens When We Try to Make Faith "Safe"?
Let’s be honest—we love control.
We like knowing what’s next.
We want clean answers.
We’d rather sync God with our Google Calendar than surrender control.
But a predictable God doesn’t lead us into powerful stories.
Look at the Bible: Abraham walked away from everything familiar (Genesis 12:1–4).
Peter stepped out of the boat in the middle of a storm (Matthew 14:28–29).
And Rahab?
She risked everything before she even knew how the story would end (Joshua 2).
When we try to sanitize faith and keep it “safe,” we may end up trading the wonder of walking with God for the illusion of comfort.

What Can We Learn from Rahab's Story?
Rahab wasn’t your typical Sunday school hero.
She wasn’t religiously trained.
She wasn’t from Israel.
She was a Canaanite prostitute living in a doomed city (Joshua 2:1).
But none of that stopped her from stepping into God’s story.
When she heard about the power of Israel’s God—how He parted the sea and delivered His people—she responded not with fear, but with faith.
In Rahab, we see the kind of faith that moves—what we’ll call GRIT:

“For the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” – Joshua 2:11b, NIV
In Rahab, we see the kind of faith that moves—what we’ll call GRIT:
G.R.I.T.
G – God-Rooted
Rahab didn’t just believe in God. She trusted that Yahweh was the one true God over all. That belief reoriented her allegiance (Joshua 2:11). She switched sides in the middle of a battle—and that takes courage.
R – Risk-Infused
Rahab put her life on the line.
She hid the spies, lied to the king’s men, and staked her future on a God she had only heard stories about (Joshua 2:4–6).
Faith that costs nothing often changes nothing.
I – Infused Action
Rahab’s belief didn’t stay internal. She hung the scarlet rope in her window as a signal of her trust, even before the walls of Jericho fell (Joshua 2:18, 21). She moved before she had proof.
T – Trust in the Outcome
She didn’t know the timeline. She didn’t have control. But she trusted that when the dust settled, God would come through—and He did (Joshua 6:25).

What Does Real Faith Look Like?
Real faith isn't…
Real faith moves anyway.
It’s messy. Risky. Sometimes uncomfortable.
But it’s always worth it.
- Having all the answers
- Living a rule-based religion
- Waiting until you’re “ready” or “good enough”
Real faith moves anyway.
It’s messy. Risky. Sometimes uncomfortable.
But it’s always worth it.
“Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” – James 2:17, NIV
Life Application: Move It or Lose It
Let’s get practical:
Where are you trying to live a safe faith?
Ask yourself:
This week, take one bold step of faith.
Start the conversation.
Apply for the role.
Say yes to the opportunity.
Say no to what’s draining your faith.
Give. Serve. Invite. Apologize. Obey.
Faith without motion is just theory.
Rahab didn’t settle for the predictable life in Jericho.
She took a risk, trusted God—and became part of the lineage of Jesus (Matthew 1:5).
And you? You were made for more too.
More than survival. More than comfort.
More than polished religion.
You were made to walk with God in the wild.
Because He’s still writing stories…
And He’s inviting you to step outside the lines.
Where are you trying to live a safe faith?
Ask yourself:
- Where is God asking me to step out when staying still feels safer?
- What decision have I been delaying, waiting for the "perfect time"?
- What small act of obedience have I been putting off that could lead to big growth?
This week, take one bold step of faith.
Start the conversation.
Apply for the role.
Say yes to the opportunity.
Say no to what’s draining your faith.
