I Try to Follow Jesus, But My Words Get in the Way
Words are powerful. God spoke light into existence with His words, and as beings created in His image, we, too, have the incredible power to speak life or death through our words. Yet for many of us who follow Jesus, our words often trip us up on our faith journey.
Why Our Words Matter So Much
We love to talk. The average American has over 30 conversations a day, and we spend one-fifth of our lives talking. In just one year, our conversations would fill 66 books of 800 pages each. Men speak about 20,000 words daily, while women speak about 30,000.
With all these words flowing from our mouths, it's no wonder that Proverbs 10:19 warns us: "Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut."

What Jesus Says About Our Words
Jesus makes it clear just how seriously God takes our words. In Matthew 12:36-37, He says: "And I tell you this. You must give an account on Judgment Day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you."
The words we speak provide clear evidence of where we are spiritually. The depth of our sins, the pollution of our hearts, and our need for saving grace are all evidenced in the words that come out of our mouths.

What James Teaches About Controlling Our Tongues
The book of James contains more teaching about our words than any other book in the New Testament. In James 3:1-12, we find the longest sustained teaching in the Bible about our tongues and the use of our words.
We All Stumble in Many Ways
James reminds us that "we all make mistakes"—or, more accurately, we all stumble in many ways with our words. There are countless ways we can sin with our mouths: lying, embellishing, yelling, complaining, gossiping, using God's name in vain, making racial jokes, verbal bullying, slander, manipulation, and exaggeration.
These lists catch all of us at some level. This isn't just for people who use profanity - it's for everyone who follows Jesus.

Four Keys to Managing Your Mouth
1. Accept the Difficult Challenge of Controlling Your Words
James presents us with three specific challenges embedded in his teaching:
The Challenge to Influence Others: While James warns that "not many of you should become teachers," the reality is that all Christians are called to be teachers in some capacity. From Moses commanding Israel to teach God's commandments to their children, to Jesus' Great Commission calling us to teach others to obey His commands, we're all called to use our words to influence others for God.
The Challenge to Grow: James says if we could control our tongues, we would be "perfect" - meaning complete and mature. This isn't about sinless perfection, but about growing to a place where our words are always pleasing to Jesus.
The Challenge to Never Give Up: James says, "No one can tame the tongue," but this isn't meant to discourage us. Instead, it reminds us that we must rely on God's help to manage our mouths, and we should never surrender in this ongoing battle.
2. Identify the Sources Influencing Your Mouth
James uses three word pictures to help us understand what influences our words: a horse controlled by a small bit, a ship directed by a small rudder, and a forest set ablaze by a tiny spark.
The key insight is that our words have origins. We need to ask ourselves: Who's holding the reins to my mouth? Who's the captain of what I say? Who's tending the fire of my words?
If you surround yourself with people who swear, complain, gossip, or speak negatively, that will likely influence your own speech patterns. This includes not just the people we spend time with, but also the music we listen to, the movies we watch, the social media we consume, and the content we read.
3. Never Underestimate the Power of Your Words
James describes the tongue as "a restless evil, full of deadly poison." Words can be incredibly harmful - they can literally destroy lives. But they can also be incredibly healing.
Consider how you could be "antivenom" to others who have been poisoned by hurtful words. Almost everyone you meet has been wounded by someone else's words. Your encouraging words could be exactly what they need to hear.
Words of encouragement have their own power, and when said by the right people, they can change everything. The beautiful truth is that most of the time, we are the right people to speak life into someone's situation.
4. Find Consistency Between Your Worship and Your Words
James identifies the central problem: "Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God... Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right."
One minute we're singing about how much we love Jesus, and the next minute we're tearing someone down. This inconsistency reveals a deeper issue - we're acting outside of our true identity as Christians.

Life Application
The Heart of the Matter
Jesus said, "Out of the heart, the mouth speaks." The real issue isn't just managing our external words, but allowing God to transform our hearts from the inside out.
When we become Christians, the Holy Spirit should flood into our lives and produce the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and goodness. These qualities should naturally flow out through our words.
If there's a disconnect between our worship and our words, we need to examine whether we've truly surrendered our lives to Jesus. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than going to a sporting event makes you an athlete.
This week, commit to being "antivenom" through your words. Look for opportunities to speak life, encouragement, and hope into the lives of people around you. Remember that the most powerful words you speak this week might not be in a big meeting or presentation, but in a quiet conversation with one person, a thoughtful text message, or whispered prayers.
Ask yourself these questions:
What sources are currently influencing the words I speak? Do I need to change what I consume or who I spend time with?
The challenge is clear: accept that controlling your words is difficult but necessary, identify what's influencing your speech, recognize the power of your words for good or harm, and align your everyday words with your worship of Jesus. Remember, this transformation happens from the inside out through the power of Christ's love and the Holy Spirit's work in your life.

- When was the last time I prayed, specifically asking God to help me manage my mouth?
- How can I use my words this week to build someone up who has been torn down by others?
- Is there consistency between how I worship God and how I speak to others made in His image?
