The Upside Down Life

Jesus begins the Beatitudes with a paradox that challenges our culture's emphasis on self-sufficiency: blessed are the poor in spirit. To be poor in spirit means recognizing our spiritual bankruptcy apart from God and admitting that we cannot earn our way to Him through goodness or effort. This isn't about weakness but about surrendering our attempts to build our own kingdoms around success, control, and self-made accomplishments. The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who come to God with empty hands, acknowledging their desperate need for a Savior rather than trying to impress Him with their achievements.
